    Press Release.....

Responsiveness To Families: Local Temple Offers NEW 1-Day-A-Week Hebrew School

Park Ridge, May 15, 2010 - Temple Beth Sholom of Pascack Valley, an egalitarian Conservative synagogue in the Pascack Valley, in response to expressed needs of the community, is offering 1-Day-a-Week Hebrew School on Sunday mornings, enhanced by Shabbat Learning Services and Study Hours.

Sheila Toffell, Principal of Temple Beth Sholom Hebrew School, explained. "To best reflect the needs of the families in this area we need to think progressively. Our number one priority is that our children are given the best Jewish education possible to become knowledgeable and responsible Jewish adults. They must also be prepared for their Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Tuesday Hebrew School has always been the more difficult day for our children, because they have already been in school all day and have copious amounts of school homework. Instead, they will come to Hebrew School on Sunday fresh and ready to learn. Extending Sunday's session to three hours gives us a solid block of time in which to offer a quality program to our students and our families."

According to Jan Seiffer, President of Temple Beth Sholom, and current resident of Montvale, "We believe this new direction appeals to many families in a community in which both parents work, and their children are overscheduled with homework, school clubs and sports. We instantly saw the positive reaction and interest from many of our families and their friends".

Rabbi Gerald Friedman, Rabbi of Temple Beth Sholom for the past 12 years, added this perspective. "Our new schedule moves our Tuesday afternoon "School Tefillah With the Rabbi" program to Saturday morning School Shabbat Services. The students will meet with me, our principal and teenage assistants in the sanctuary to learn the prayers and their meanings. In addition, I hope to create learning and celebration opportunities on Shabbat in people's homes, for example around late afternoon / dinner time. Before coming to Temple Beth Sholom, I was the Hillel Rabbi at the University of Florida in Gainesville for 22 years. Part of our success was to launch programs in dorms, Greek houses and apartment complexes to reach students where they live. I am very excited about bringing a whole array of Shabbat programming to our families, which will of course enrich our childrens' Jewish experience".

Temple Beth Sholom is a down to earth and friendly congregation of families from all over Northern Bergen County including Park Ridge, River Vale, Hillsdale, Montvale, Woodcliff Lake, Upper Saddle River, Mahwah, Ho-ho-Kus, Saddle River, and Allendale. The congregation offers regular, interactive services on Shabbat and Holiday services all year long and a full array of social and cultural programs run by our Men's Club and Sisterhood and other committees.

Temple Beth Sholom is currently offering a special Family Membership promotion through June 17th which includes a FREE family membership for 1 year and deferred building fund for new families who enroll a minimum of one child in our Hebrew School for the new school year which begins September 2010. The promotion includes free tickets for immediate family members for adult and childrens' High Holiday services. Hebrew School tuition must be paid in full by August 1st.

Thank you for your interest in our Synagogue. We have produced this web site to acquaint you with our congregation and facilities. We feel, however, that a congregation is best known through its membership and its Rabbi. If you would like a closer and more personal view of who and what we are, please contact us at the Synagogue and we would be honored to help you.

The new Shabbat Siddur used at the Friday evening service allows greater participation by those not familiar with Hebrew. Our Sabbath Services are held on Friday evening at 8:00 PM and Saturday morning at 9:30 AM. Children are encouraged to participate and lead prayers. The religious philosophy follows decisions of the Law Committee of the Rabbinical Assembly (Conservative) with women counted in the Minyan and receiving Aliyyot to the Bimah. Services are characterized by beautiful cantorial and congregational singing, as well as the Rabbi's explanations of the structure and content of the prayers. A highlight of the Shabbat morning service is the Torah study session with the Rabbi, who combines insights from our religious tradition with those offered by social science and other major contemporary contributions to the world of ideas and ideals.
